Black History Month: “This is where my history starts”

Описание к видео Black History Month: “This is where my history starts”

To celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth, Superintendent Naomi Edwards joined the artist Evewright at his brilliant immersive art installation, the Tilbury Bridge Walkway of Memories.

The bridge is one of the original walkways where passengers from the SS Empire Windrush passed through on their arrival in the UK in 1948.

The bridge’s 432 panes of glass feature photographs, documents, tickets and audio recordings from 130 people from the Windrush era and their families. It tells the story of the lives they established and their contribution to British society.

Naomi’s grandparents moved to the UK in the 1950s, initially leaving her dad and aunt with relatives in Jamaica.

Watch our film to hear Naomi and Evewright discuss the bridge’s significance, the importance of black British stories and their feelings about vandalism the bridge the recently suffered.
