Описание к видео Moon: At This Rate We'll Never Go Back!

The moon at this rate we'll never go back on February 22nd a spacecraft the size of a phone booth named Odys made history by landing near the Moon South Pole. Built by Houston-based Intuitive Machines, it became the first US Lander to touch down on the moon in over 50 years and the first private Lander to ever reach the lunar surface.

However, the landing was far from flawless. Days later, it became apparent that during the touchdown one of Odys six legs had broken and the probe had tipped onto its side. Almost everything was still operational, but the real issue was the solar panels no longer able to properly receive sunlight. This problem rang a death knell as Earth's controllers decided to permanently shut down the Lander.

A similar fate befell the Japanese spacecraft Smart Lander for Investigating the Moon (SLIM) weeks earlier, which had successfully completed Japan's first lunar Landing only to end up overturned due to an engine malfunction during descent. The SLIM Lander’s solar cells were facing the wrong direction and failed to power its instruments and communications, leading engineers to terminate it as well.
