Parts of Lhonak Lake experienced a devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Flood, causing a rapid increase in water levels with extremely high velocities downstream along the Teesta River basin. Glacial lake outburst flood happens when lakes created by melting glaciers suddenly break open, This may occur for a number of reasons, such as a large accumulation of water in the lake or an earthquake-related trigger.
