From Army tank commander to Le Mans legend: How eccentric British engineer 'Teddy Teabag' - played by Christian Bale in a new Hollywood movie - helped Ford beat Ferrari in epic 1966 race

The true story of how two designers from Ford were tasked with building a car to defeat Ferrari at the legendary 24 Hours at Le Mans race in 1966 has just hit the big screen - and one of them was British.

Ken Miles, an eccentric engineer and skilled driver, hailed from Birmingham. He also drove the pair's pride and joy, the GT40, in the epic race but was cheated out of first place due to a PR stunt gone wrong.

Miles's co-designer, meanwhile, was an all-American boy from Texas, named Carroll Shelby.

Such was the affection that Shelby and his US crew had for Miles - a naturalised American who never lost his Brummie accent - that they called him 'Teddy Teabag' due to his oh-so-British tea-drinking habits.

Together they would build the GT40, the first car ever created by a US company to win the iconic race, as chronicled in the movie Ford v. Ferrari (retitled Le Mans '66 for the UK).
