A quick look at the history Earth Day and the environmental movements that it started in order to understand why the Peoples Climate Movement means hope for progressive climate action. Specifically, I look at how and why the first Earth Day didn't seem to created a progressive left vision that included and joined with the anti-war, civil rights, and women's liberation movements at the time. Instead, the first Earth Day was built upon a coalition of primarily white, middle-class folks interested in environmentalism. This has continued up to today but seems to be changing with the rise of environmental justice movements and the understanding that frontline communities should be those that lead and guide an environmental revolution.
