A great misconception that the public has and which most relativists do not correct and clarify (perhaps because most of them don’t know this themselves) is that Einstein’s General Relativity gravity can be applied down here on Earth. The worldly wisdom is that the reason a spoon falls to the ground is that the space in its vicinity is warped like a hammock… the popular ball on canvas mechanism.

Absolutely not!

General Relativity’s field equations are only applicable to cosmic events. If relativity gravity could work at our everyday level, Quantum mathemagicians would no longer have jobs. Gravity at the atomic level would have a cause: a local depression around the tiny ‘mass’. And since the poor little photon swerves every time it encounters warped space, light would never travel ‘straight’.

The funny part is that you find all these ignorant youtubers who illustrate just such earthly time-warping scenarios…
