Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes (D) joined Arizona Horizon to discuss a recent cyberattack on the Secretary of State’s website, in which Iranian hackers replaced candidate photos with images of the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Fontes described the breach as a “very sophisticated attack” and assured viewers that the issue was resolved swiftly, with the altered photos removed shortly after discovery.

Fontes outlined the enhanced cybersecurity measures his office is implementing, including updates to the candidate portal to prevent future intrusions. He emphasized that critical systems, such as the voter registration database and the E-Qual platform, were not impacted. Fontes also addressed the decision not to alert the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), citing a loss of confidence in the agency due to perceived politicization under the current administration.
