This is my hike around Stoppenberg. Through my music, I have tried to convey the many different aspects we encountered.

Stoppenberg is a district of the city of Essen and is located in the northeast of the city. The district is mainly characterized by dense residential development, some green spaces, and small commercial areas.

Although the name suggests a mountain, in the Middle Ages it was simply the name given to a hill that could be climbed via steps, on top of which the collegiate church served as a place of worship for the growing population in this area. Today, the small Romanesque church still sits enthroned on the hill and serves as a place of worship for the Order of Discalced Carmelite Nuns of “Mary in Distress.”

Stoppenberg is also home to the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex. With its striking winding tower of Shaft XII, the Zollverein Coal Mine is a reminder of the long mining tradition, but today it is also considered one of the most important examples of the structural change that has taken place in the region. In 2001, the Zollverein Coal Mine and Coking Plant were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
