Rio de Janeiro 1979 archive footage

Archival footage shot by an amateur filmmaker while visiting Brazil in 1979.

It contains stock footage of Rio de Janeiro:
00:00 - 00:35: Car rides along Aterro do Flamengo, coming from downtown or from Santos Dumont Airport and going to Botafogo. The footage begins at Praia do Flamengo and ends at Praia de Botafogo.
00:36 until 02:41: a lot of panoramic views taken from the top of Pão de Açúcar
00:36 - 01:18: Beginning at 01:02, the footage shows sequentially Botafogo Cove and part of Baía da Guanabara, including Praia do Flamengo.
01:18 - 01:29: The buildings shown in the beginning of the views belong to the neighborhood of Urca.
01:30 - 01:38: In the distance one can see Copacabana and Leblon beaches.
01:44 - 01:50: what seems to be a small island at the right corner of the footage is the fortress of Laje, one of the several fortresses built in the old times by Portuguese and Brazilians, to avoid invasion of the Baía da Guanabara by foreign warships, especially French ones. Soon after Pedro Álvares Cabral discovered Brazil in 1500, the first settlers in the current Rio de Janeiro city area were the French, beginning at 1555. Only in 1567 the Portuguese came to win them. But in 1612 the French settled in the Northeast and were won again by the Portuguese in 1615. Then they gave up Brazil and settled Guiana Francesa (French Guyana). Nevertheless, they came back again in the beginning of the 18th century and invaded Rio de Janeiro one more time and plundered the city. The inhabitants suffered a lot with those invasions and had to pay a big ransom to the French. That's why there are so many fortresses around and inside Baía da Guanabara: at Rio de Janeiro city side of the bay, there are Copacabana, Leme, São João and Conceição; in the middle of the bay, Laje; on the other side of the bay, in Niterói, there are the fortresses of Gragoatá, São Luís, Pico, Santa Cruz, Barão do Rio Branco and Imbuí.
