It takes place on the last day of the Hindu lunar calendar month of Shraavana, usually in August. The name “Raksha Bandhan” comes from Sanskrit and essentially means “a bond of protection or care.” During the festival, sisters tie a Rakhi, a special thread, around their brothers’ wrists to wish them a long life. In return, brothers give gifts to their sisters and promise to protect them.
Historical accounts trace the origins of Raksha Bandhan back to ancient times, specifically the Dwapara Yuga. Lord Krishna killed the evil King Shishupal to protect Dharma on Earth. During the battle, Lord Krishna injured his finger. Draupadi, seeing his injury, pulled a piece of her saree and tied it around his bleeding finger. Touched by her kindness, Lord Krishna promised to repay her in the future. Years later, when the Pandavas lost Draupadi in a game of dice to the dishonest Kauravas, Lord Krishna protected Draupadi’s honor through divine intervention.
In modern times, the practice of Raksha Bandhan has evolved. People sometimes tie Rakhis to friends and other loved ones, not just siblings. Ultimately, the festival celebrates the bond between individuals who care for and look out for each other, regardless of their gender or relationship.
