Listen to the calm sound of rain pattering on the roof, deep in the rainforest.

I love listening to the sounds of rain in the rainforest. There is something timeless and incredibly grounding about this experience. Rain falling on vegetation dampens all the sounds around except for a few very loud insect calls.

While I have recorded hundreds of hours of rain on natural surfaces, I haven't given much though to the sounds of rain recorded from huts and houses. The man-made element in the latter example has always seemed extraneous and even alien in the context of a primary tropical forest.

I was recently listening back to some of my recordings from Costa Rica when I found an 8 hour session recorded from our hut at night. At the time I didn't think much of it but since then I've somewhat changed my mind about human sounds in natural environments.

Humans have lived here for hundreds of thousands of years. There is no such thing as an environment completely free from anthropological influence here. Having said that, the impact that humans have had here is low and easily missed. It's very different from what has been happening to the planet in the last few hundred years. Humans living here have a very small footprint and do not put a burden on the natural resources. Looking at it from this perspective, the sounds of rain falling on the roof of my hut seem more acceptable and nicer to my ears.
