Thre was a major flood event in late September 2024 when the Kosi River’s embankment was breached in parts of Darbhanga, Bihar, causing widespread damage.

On September 30, 2024, the embankment of the Kosi River was breached (or ruptured) near Kartarpur block in Darbhanga district.

Villages like Kirtarpur and Ghanshyampur were inundated by floodwaters.

The breach led to destruction of houses (both thatched and pucca), damage to infrastructure, loss of standing crops, submersion of roads and bridges, etc.

In one village (Bhubhol in Kartarpur block), about 15–16 brick houses were reported as fully damaged by the force of water.

The flood was part of a larger flooding event in Bihar during that period. More than 16 lakh people across several districts were affected due to breaches in Kosi, Bagmati, Gandak embankments.

The situation was exacerbated by heavy rainfall upstream (Nepal / catchment area) and high releases from barrages, which increased the pressure on embankments.

Many people lost homes (some completely destroyed) and belongings.

Crops were damaged or wiped out in many areas.

Infrastructure (roads, bridges, power grids) was submerged or damaged.

Displacement: People had to move to safer or higher ground.

Relief & rescue operations were undertaken by NDRF, state disaster management, etc.

Repair works on embankments were immediately started in affected zones.
