Abandoned gear, like crab pots and nets, can sit on the ocean floor for decades—trapping and killing hundreds of thousands of marine animals, like seals, porpoises, salmon, and crabs. At Point Roberts alone, abandoned nets were destroying $437,000 worth of crab every season.

Hear from Jason Morgan, Marine Projects Manager for the Northwest Straits Foundation. As manager of the Foundation’s Derelict Fishing Gear Program, he works with state, federal, Tribal, and recreational stakeholders to achieve the program’s goal of eliminating harm from derelict fishing gear in Puget Sound. Here he discuss the problems, challenges and solutions of dealing with derelict fishing gear in Puget Sound and what we all can do to help.
