In early October, 2023 the harmonic progression for this piece just sort of “arrived.”
This is always a good sign. The matching melody came about quickly thereafter.

I was thinking of the “Spanish Steps” in Rome which (next to Venice and Paris) is my favorite city.

The Spanish Steps represent figuratively and metaphorically the close relationship between
the Sacred and the Eternal city, shown through the elevation and vastness of the monument.

The seven consecutive fifths on the last chord (E flat, B flat, F, C, G, D, A) make up an E flat major 6/9 sharp 11 chord. This suits the concept of ascending the steps very well.

On another level, almost every guitar generated song has a certain natural “Spanish” feel to it
that emanates from the very essence of the instrument. In that way, too, the title has relevance.
