【たいものだ】

(I'd) really like to..., (I'd) really hope…, (I'd) really wish…,

たい/たくない＋ものだ

This construction is used to emphasize desires or feelings of wishes that have been harbored for a long time or desires that are not easily realized. It connects to expressions of one's own desires using "～たい". It can only be used when expressing the speaker's own desires and cannot be used to express the desires of others.

〜したいなぁ…

いつか一戸建てを買いたいものだ
→いつか一戸建てを買いたいなぁ…
I really wish I could buy a house someday...


将来はアメリカに住みたいものだ
→将来はアメリカに住みたいなぁ…
I really wish I could live in the US in the future...


【たいVSたいものだ】

When expressing a temporary desire or a wish that can be easily realized, you can simply use stem+たい。たいものだexpresses a stronger desire compared to たい. たいものだis mostly used for long-held desires or wishes that are difficult to realize, rather than current hopes.


〇水が飲みたい。
I want to drink water.


×水が飲みたいものだ。
I really wish I could drink water. (This can be used, for example, when one's daily water intake is restricted due to illness.)


お金があれば、宇宙旅行したいものだ。
If I had the money, I would really like to go on a space trip.


一度でいいから、宝くじにあたってみたいもんだ。
I would really love to win the lottery just once.


彼女とはできればこれからも仲良くしていたいものです。
I really hope to stay on good terms with her in the future if possible.


年を取ったことは認めたくないものだ。
I really don't want to admit that I'm getting older.


【Vてほしい/てほしくない＋ものだ】
For desires expressing a wish for someone to do something, "てform +ほしい" is used.

[たいものだ] I wish to buy a house → the buyer: "myself"
[てほしいものだ] I wish someone would buy a house → the buyer: "someone other than myself" (husband, parents, children, etc.)


週に一度ぐらいは彼に外食に連れていってほしいもんだ。
I would really like him to take me out for dinner about once a week.


たまには息子に何も言わずに宿題をしてほしいものです。
I really wish my son would do his homework without being told sometimes.

政治家には国民の税金の無駄遣いをしないでほしいものだ。
I really hope politicians won't waste taxpayers' money.
