It always makes me cry when I talk about this bcos it's true & breaks my musical heart as a Trey Songz fan, my actual heart as an African fan who looks at him as a role model since the "Trey Songz: My Moment" episodes, & my expectations for the music & media materials I hoped we would have had from him by now.

The end of her article says: "That Trey is still touring and releasing projects makes the absence of his once pre-eminently virile presence feel all the more jarring. That his star power is hidden in plain sight feels all the more unfortunate for Songz, his fans, and those who love R&B in all its forms. Rather than hone his songwriting or demonstrate personal growth in his lyrics, Songz insists on remaining suspended in his own mixed metaphors. He isn’t missing, but his magnetic energy has faded. Trey Songz may still be performing, but we’ve lost Mr. Steal Yo Girl."

Do you know heartbreaking this is as a fan because its true?
Moreso, in 2025 it feels like we lost Trigga 😭 It feels like we lost the Prince of VA & Trey from the hood too. We so badly need him in music, his original flavour, his pureness & potency of musicianship, the clean & relatable storytelling that's globally appealing... This is why I'm saying he's in the matrix & crying for him to get up off his azz & do all that he intentioned to in 2008/2009. ACTUALLY BE THE GREATEST MUSICIAN OF OUR TIME. The world needs to hear his God✝️ given gift (ie. a voice for the soul) but they can't hear him if he continues to stay in the matrix 💔

Tyler Lewis (2009) review of the Ready album in popmatters.com validated what I've been hearing all this while. I lack technical music knowledge but standing on what I hear, I found an explanation by Lewis.

He wrote "Trey Songz is the most frustrating R&B star to emerge this decade.

He possesses a piercing tenor and an instantly recognizable vocal presence, something his contemporaries (from Mario to Chris Brown to Ne-Yo) probably wish they had.

And when he has material to match his voice, he is peerless.

“Gotta Go”, from his debut album, was the most effortlessly soulful pop song to emerge from the recent crop of millennial R&B new jacks. “We Should Be”, from his sophomore album, Trey Day, was every bit its equal.

And yet, for as talented and gifted as he is, Songz’ albums are always a mixed bag. In fact, he seems strikingly unconcerned with how silly some of his work actually is."

This is the only reviewer I found that has provided vocabulary to what I hear in Mr. Songz voice.

I'm saying this as an OG fan & as someone who sees him as the role model, in 2025, Trey Songz is still the most frustrating R&B star. Knowing that his musicality is expansive & that he can make music in multiple genres effortlessly, he is also disappointing bcos we do not have substantial music materials from him. He is the GREATEST MUSICIAN OF OUR TIME but he has to come out of this matrix so the world can actually see him for what he really is.
