In the days since Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica as a Category 5 storm, IDES has been in touch with numerous partners in Jamaica and affected areas of Haiti. While there are reports of widespread destruction in both countries, we’re praising God that our partners are safe so far. Communication has been difficult due to the damage to infrastructure and we just heard from partners in the hardest hit areas of Black River and Savanna La Mar today. Please join us in praying that communication abilities would be improved so that plans can be made more efficiently and effectively.

Currently, IDES is working with partners to provide emergency relief. Our partners will be on the ground distributing items such as food, clean water, tarps, and other essentials during the initial aftermath of the hurricane. IDES is also preparing to send our International Project Manager to Jamaica next week. He will be surveying the damage, helping partners organize their response, and making recommendations on how IDES should continue to respond. Please pray for wisdom and safety for our staff members and partners as they work to serve many people who have had their homes and communities destroyed by the hurricane.
