It’s still unclear whether the person hit during the Volvo auto-brake demonstration was actually the CEO or not. Early reports and viral videos sparked speculation about the involvement of a company executive, but multiple sources indicate that the incident took place at a dealership in the Dominican Republic sand involved staff or journalists, not Volvo’s CEO.

Volvo later clarified that the vehicle involved a Volvo XC60-was not equipped with the optional pedestrian detection functionality, which is necessary for the car to automatically brake for people. The car’s standard auto-braking system is designed to avoid other vehicles, not pedestrians, unless the extra feature is purchased and activated.

Additionally, Volvo explained that even if the pedestrian detection system had been present, the auto-brake feature can be overridden if the driver accelerates intentionally, which appears to have happened in this case. Both individuals struck in the demonstration were bruised but not seriously injured. Volvo strongly advises against testing such systems with real people due to the risks involved.
