Sina Grace on Advice for Young Creators
Omar: What advice do you have for aspiring writers, creators, anyone looking to work into comics, or make it in comics, or make comic books? What advice are you giving ten-year-old you right now? Go.

Sina: You're not rushing me, I got to come up with a new answer.

Omar: Take your time because I want it to be impactful and new and stuff that, you know, if you had that information when you were younger or during the process, it would have actually helped you. Not just like...

Sina: I don't think I've said this to you. I think I've said this before and this is advice I wish I could have given myself, is like focus yourself, like beyond the fact that it's really hard and you have to keep trying and do it constantly and never give up on all that crap, really focus, crap, I'm hilarious, really focused though. Like really figure out what you want to be and focus on that and be the best version of that because I got lost being an editor for a few years because I needed to make ends meet. I was drawing other people's books, which is super fun, but also, really confuse the marketplace as to like what I was and what I brought. Like maybe I should have like just done the Drawn and Quarterly Fantagraphics route and like made smaller books instead of trying to be an Image Comics guy, I don't know, it doesn't matter, I landed fine, like I'm fine. But I think the comics market was really confused about me for a long time. Jeff Lemire said this to me, he's like, "who the fuck are you?" He didn't say it like that because he's Canadian, sweet as a daffodil; he might not be a Canadian but he lives in Canada now anyway. But he was just like, "what are you? Like you're drawing a kid's book over here, you're drawing the little depressed boy over there, you're doing this weird action book like over yonder, like I can't - like what do you want to be making? Like the work is the evidence of who you are". So, I wish I could have been a little more focused in those earlier years and just really kind of dedicated myself to like a certain type of output. I mean, I'm happy now, but yeah, I think that's something I wish I could have told myself when I was younger is like even in school like stop.

Omar: Be who you are.

Sina: Yeah, like don't be in yearbook and journalism, pick one, like it doesn't matter, you know what I mean? Like stop spreading yourself thin and focus, like be A plus at one thing rather than like be B minus in everything.
