Ep. 108 A PAIR OF MOSAIC WINE GLASSES and Mosaic Roses for the Garden!

I start making a set of mosaic wine glasses in gold tones. One will have light accent tiles and the other will have dark. I add snakes of black Apoxie Sculpt to the base of the wine glass and press it in place with my gloved hand. I Start with the edge beads, placing a strand of strung beads, pressing them in place and then pulling the strand out. Next I lay in the big beads, I place them about 1/3 of the way around using my favorite method, eyeballing. Then the circumference of the stem is covered in a strand of beads and I pull the strand out. Then the lighter accent tiles are placed and smaller beads are pushed into any spaces leftover.

Then I start the second glass, this time showing how I roll out my snakes on the plastic shelf paper (super handy to keep my worksurface from getting mucked up with Apoxie.) Again, using the same gold beads, the edges are laid first and pressed in place. This time I use darker accent tiles. In no time I have a beautiful set of gold mosaic wine glasses.

Next, I decide to make some rose mosaics for the garden and I am using some round slate coasters as my substrates. I use GE II Silicone as my adhesive. I have three pink roses I made as a test and I have 10 more to make! I start with the yellow centers and work on three at a time, building around each one slowly. Once I finish the flowers on three yellow, I switch to the other colors. That way I can work on the leaves all at the same time.

So I start the three red roses and then tackle the three whites. I have a nice method build with a steady rhythm, so they come together quite smoothly. Last of all, I work on the Peace rose, which has a yellow center and pink outer petals.

Now that all the roses are finished and lined up, I can start on the leaves. I switch from the dark green sample glass to a softer green that is more true to roses and will have better contrast against the slate. I make each leaf half and place it before making 2 or 3 nips where the leaf veins run. It gives the leaves a nice definition once they are grouted.

I came back to the studio the next day with some taped off roses, all ready for pre-mixed Spectrlock I grout in Natural Gray by Laticrete. The red roses I will use Slate Gray. Following the directions inside the tub, I spread the grout and wait just a few minutes before wiping off the excess with a damp sponge using circular motion. Then the waiting begins. After about 30-45 minutes I return and remove the tape. I wait a while longer and clean the grout film off with a Magic Eraser. Then I wipe off any remaining haze or water with a cotton rag. The next day I cam in with a dry cotton rag and brushed off any remaining grout crumbs.

Lastly, I took them outside in the bright sun to see them sparkle and Peanut gave her approval!
