Last week U.S. President Donald Trump met Russia President Putin In Alaska.
Followed by yesterday Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met Trump in white House.
What did they discuss ? What has Zelensky decided ? Let me explain.
In the last week 3 hrs meeting with Putin and Trump, Russia explained 2 conditions.
1 Leaving Crimea to Russia.
2 Not joining NATO.
Why is Crimea important to Russia?
Before 1990 Ukraine was under Russia.
They became an independent country in 1991.
Crimea is a peninsula that borders Ukraine but is largely populated by ethnic Russians.
Russia’s leaders have consistently claimed Crimea belongs to Russia.
In 2014, Russia officially added Crimea.
This was a major loss for Ukraine.
Because Cimea holds large reserves of oil and natural gas.
It is also a key tourist destination.
By taking control of Crimea, Russia strengthened its military presence in the Black Sea.
Crimea is connected to Russia by a single 19 km bridge, which has both road and rail lines.
In 2022, Russian forces used this bridge to launch their first invasion into Ukraine.
In this context, Donald Trump is suggesting Crimea should be officially recognized as part of Russia.
2. Russia opposes NATO - North Atlantic Treaty Organization was formed in 1949 with 12 countries including the U.S., Canada, Britain, and France.
Their aim is If any member country is attacked, all members must respond together.
Ukraine believes that joining NATO will help protect it from Russia attack.
Even though Ukraine has shown interest in NATO since the 1990s the western countries have not accepted.
