November 2020 saw outdoor apparel retailer North Face disclosing a credential stuffing attack, Denver insurance company Vertafore lost the personal info of 28 million Texas drivers, while the multimedia platform Mashable reported on its own leaked database.

But the breach of the month goes to video game developer Capcom, which had 350,000 customers’ and business partners’ information stolen, and held hostage for payment. This Ragnar Locker ransomware attack was also responsible for disrupting internal systems at the 41-year-old Japanese company. Capcom is just the latest in a fast-growing list of high-profile ransomware victims that also includes Baltimore County Public Schools, France-based entertainment company Banijay, laptop manufacturer Compal, and web host Managed.com. All of whom have seen their sensitive data leveraged for hundreds of thousands of dollars by opportunistic hackers. And companies are usually forced to pay the ransom, as few options exist after a successful attack.

The outbreak of Covid-19 only exacerbated this trend, as security teams had to suddenly secure their company’s infrastructure as employees accessed it remotely… while also working remotely themselves. This left vulnerabilities in previously air-gapped systems that were now accessible to the open web.

Despite this, a recent McAfee report found that “56% of surveyed organizations said they don’t have a plan to prevent and respond to a security incident.” – perhaps falsely believing their data is not important enough to steal. But it’s vital to remember that hackers don’t care about the value of the data itself, but how valuable it is to you.
