Audit to Controllership and FP&A with Nicolas Boucher

Basically in audit, what I find great is you have the first two years of junior where you really need to learn what is edit. You really need to get the technical skills, but also the soft skills to work in audit and have the working culture of working in team, communicating with the client, summarizing all of what you do in a proper documentation and starting to get the knowledge of the business to have critical judgment on what you audit, you go to senior.

So just after two years of experience, the third year you get to really coach people. You get to be more client facing and have more decisions in the team. You can participate in the audit strategy with your manager. And if you have the chance to have smaller assignments, you can also have a role of team lead.

So really quickly you develop yourself or your soft skills. Then if you just change industry in between, you also learn a new industry or new clients. So there is a lot to learn. And then after once you do your two or three years of senior role in the last year.

Third year of senior role, you could have some manager role or being assistant manager. And that was my case in Singapore because all of the managers left so I could take over the role as manager. And then you learn how to manage a team, how to manage an assignment, how to manage the budget that you have for clients, how to negotiate fees sometimes, and how to deal with your partner.

So how you make him trust that the work that has been done is good enough that all of the audits is compliant and that the company's accounts are relevant and good to sign. And then once you get ready officially managed and you get like a bigger portfolio, you can also get bigger clients. And then all of that is at another scale. And also I did that back in October.

But then what I was seeing, what the senior manager and the directors were doing, it was for me less of a change in compared to the junior auditor and manager steps. So I always thought anyway that I didn't want to do my career and become a partner because that's not what I was looking for.
