Palestinians in Khan Younis held Eid al-Adha prayers on Sunday among ruins, as the city lacked any signs of celebration amid the continuous war.
People sat on prayer mats that they placed among the rubble of surrounding destroyed buildings, while few children wore the traditional jalabiya on their way to prayers.
“There are no sacrificed animals, now we sacrifice ourselves, we sacrifice our own bodies, but there’s none of Eid celebrations in Gaza,” Palestinian Mahmoud Abdel Jawad, who came for the Eid prayers, said.
The war in Gaza erupted when Hamas militants stormed southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing around 1,200 people and seizing more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.
Israel has responded with a military assault on the Gaza Strip that has killed more than 37,296 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry and destroyed most of the enclave. — Report from Reuters
