Описание к видео "Eating is Understanding with Robert Valgenti" — The DePaul Humanities Center

The DePaul University Humanities Center presented "Eating is Understanding" as part of its 2015-16 series, "Hungry Hungry Humanities" and its ongoing investigation of the relationship between food and the arts & humanities.

The event took place on March 7, 2016 at DePaul University, Student Center, room 120, 2250 N Sheffield Ave, Chicago, IL, and featured Robert Valgenti (Lebanon Valley College).

Most scholars throughout history have had a negative outlook on food and drink—at best seeing such mundane topics beneath them and at worst seeing the “temptations of food and drink” as distractions not only from clear thinking but from the well-being of the mind/soul. In a special multi-sensory, interactive foodie event, philosopher Robert Valgenti (Lebanon Valley College) explored phenomena such as deliciousness, disgust, and authenticity in order to understand how encounters with food uncover something profound about humans and the ways that they understand their world, ultimately arguing that a new day has arrived such that thinking is being awakened from its gastronomic slumber. The first 100 attendees received a bento box packed with food: a mini three-course meal that was used throughout the presentation as audience members were asked to eat together and understand together.

[Note: Apologies for the over-exposed nature of some of the PowerPoint slides. There were technical difficulties during the filming.]
