AGILE : What is Feature-driven development (FDD)?

Feature-driven development (FDD) is an iterative and incremental software development approach that emphasizes a feature-centric approach to building software systems. It is one of the agile software development methodologies that focuses on delivering tangible, working software incrementally.

FDD was created by Jeff DeLuca and Peter Coad in the late 1990s and has gained popularity due to its practical and structured approach. FDD combines best practices from various agile and traditional software development methodologies.

The key concepts and principles of Feature-driven development include:

Features: FDD revolves around features, which are small, client-valued functionalities or requirements of the software system. Each feature represents a specific piece of functionality that can be developed, tested, and delivered independently.

Five Process Activities: FDD follows five process activities to manage the development of features:
a. Develop an overall model: The project starts with creating an overall model that represents the high-level structure and organization of the software system.
b. Build a feature list: The development team works with stakeholders to identify and prioritize features. The feature list provides a roadmap for development.
c. Plan by feature: Detailed planning is done for each feature, including defining its scope, identifying the necessary development tasks, and estimating effort and schedule.
d. Design by feature: The team designs and creates feature-specific design packages, which include class and object designs for each feature.
e. Build by feature: Development is carried out in short iterations called "design-build-inspect" cycles. Each cycle focuses on implementing and delivering a single feature.

Inspection: FDD emphasizes regular inspection and review activities to ensure the quality and progress of the project. These inspections help identify and resolve issues and ensure that each feature meets the required standards.

Roles and Responsibilities: FDD defines specific roles and responsibilities for team members, including the Chief Architect, Development Manager, Chief Programmer, Class Owner, and Feature Team Members. Each role has well-defined tasks and areas of expertise.

Benefits of Feature-driven development include improved visibility, effective team collaboration, early and frequent delivery of working software, and a focus on client value. FDD is particularly suited for larger projects with multiple development teams and complex feature requirements.

It's important to note that while FDD is an agile methodology, it is just one of several approaches available. Teams can choose the methodology that best suits their project requirements, team structure, and organizational context.
