Fashion is more than just clothes — it’s personal for Ruby Redstone, a fashion historian and writer behind the newsletter “Old Fashioned.” A lot of Ruby’s work explores what fashion means to people’s lives, usually starting with her own.

“My process for deciding what trends and pieces I want to write about usually begins with myself, which is quite selfish,” she jokes. “But it's nice to have a touch point of something that I'm excited about wearing.” Ruby’s favorite fashion history topic: 1930s womenswear. From not being able to wear trousers then, to having every option of pants and jeans now — and how it transforms the term “personal style.” “What strikes me right now is the amount of choices we have,” she says. “To me, that's the most exciting thing happening in fashion.”

We followed Ruby around New York City for the day, as part of our series celebrating artists within the Gap community. Exploring creatives in their element — with a strong point of view, and a strong sense of style.
