Replacing the Fill Valve

Over time, the Fill Valve may become damaged or no longer function properly. This can be caused by a number of reasons like: mechanical failure, corrosion from mineral deposits, or chlorine damage from toilet bowl cleaners.

When the Fill Valve no longer functions, it can either leak profusely at the head of the valve, or leak slightly, both of which continually overfill the tank with water. In most circumstances however, the fill valve begins to stick, meaning it does not shut off the water entering the tank when it should, causing the tank to constantly be filling. Given that the Fill Valve controls the water level in the tank, it is easy to recognize that when water constantly drains into the overflow tube of the tank the problem is directly related to the Fill Valve.

Sometimes the Fill Valve only needs a minor adjustment to return it to proper function. However, in the case that the Fill Valve is leaking profusely, a complete replacement should be done. Regardless of the condition, the Fill Valve should be replaced every five years to maximize its performance.
