Pyongyang residents and North Korean military personnel visit statues at the capital's Mansu Hill on the 80th anniversary of Japan's WWII surrender and liberation of the Korean peninsula from colonial rule.

The August 15 anniversary of liberation from Japan is the only public holiday celebrated in both North and South Korea, according to Seoul's National Institute for Unification Education.
