CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Along with astronomical influences, there are also meteorological influences that can cause tides to be even higher, as seen this morning when salt water crept up the coast and on to historic downtown streets.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a coastal flood advisory for this morning's high tide, which caused moderate flooding along our coast.

Ron Morales, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist for NWS Charleston, says “we're in a stretch right now where the tides have been pretty high and we worry about a couple of things."

Morales explained that high and low tides are caused by the sun and the moon.

"Every time there's a full moon or a new moon, the tides are going to be higher because they're going to be pulling on the earth stronger by both the sun and the moon," he said. "Especially a new moon where the sun and the moon are both on the same side of the earth so you get a double pull.”
