The third expansion, The Taken King, was released on September 15, 2015, marking the end of "Year One" of Destiny.[73] Two new retail versions of Destiny, the "Legendary Edition" and "Collector's Edition", will be released alongside The Taken King: both will include a copy of the game, all "Year One" DLC, and The Taken King. The Collector's Edition is exclusive to GameStop, and includes a SteelBook case, digital content (three armor shaders and an exotic class item and emote for each class), and "Cayde-6's Intel Cache"—a collection of artwork, other items, and a Strange Coin replica. A Digital Collector's Edition is also available, which includes Destiny, all "Year One" DLC, The Taken King, and the digital content. Customers who purchase this version can immediately begin playing Destiny and all of its "Year One" DLC. Owners of the existing game, the previous two expansions, and have a character of at least level 30 will receive additional commemorative items, and have the option to receive the digital content of the Collector's Edition for an additional price.[89][18] Bungie is also offering two pre-order bonuses for The Taken King—the "Vanguard Pack" and the "Suros Arsenal Pack"— which are early access to the new Vanguard weapons and the new Suros family of weapons.[90] A new PS4 bundle will also be available, which includes a limited edition white 500GB PS4 with Destiny artwork on the face of the console, the Legendary Edition of Destiny: The Taken King, and all bonus content from the Legendary and Digital Collector's Editions.[91] Players who purchase The Taken King will receive an item called Spark of Light, which will boost one new character to level 25, the minimum level needed to play The Taken King content.[92]

The expansion will focus on Oryx, father of Crota, as he leads a new race of enemy, the Taken, to avenge his son's death.[73] Players will have access to a new PvE area, the Dreadnaught, Oryx's massive ship (with its own Patrol mode), as well as playable missions on Mars' moon Phobos (previously only available in PvP), and the raid, "King's Fall", that will "put players to the ultimate test". A new activity called Court of Oryx will be added and accessed during the Dreadnaught's Patrol mode. During Patrol, players will collect items called runes that can be used to activate a new type of public event with random bosses and three levels of difficulty. A new heavy weapon will be introduced, a sword, which will have new mechanics from the swords that can be used during certain missions involving the Hive. Three new strikes will be added and three Year One strikes will be revised that will include the Taken race in addition to the other enemies.[93] Seven new Crucible maps will be added, in addition to two new PvP modes, "Rift" and "Mayhem".[18][94][95] New sub-classes will be added for all three classes; the Hunter's new Void-based class "Nightstalker" includes a bow-like super known as the "Shadowshot" that tethers enemies together, limiting movement and preventing enemies from using abilities for a short time. The Titan's "Sunbreaker" class features a solar-based super, the "Hammer of Sol", creating a flaming hammer that can be thrown at enemies, or used for close-quarters combat. The Warlock's new sub-class, the arc-based "Stormcaller" includes the super "Stormtrance", which produces lightning bolts that chains between enemies
