Professor Peter Doherty has joined over 100 Nobel laureates calling on world leaders to stop the expansion of fossil fuels, and told Sky News, it is “reasonably obvious” cutting back on fossil fuels will help “rapidly decrease global emissions”.

“We can’t be serious about trying to rapidly decrease global emissions of green house gases, which as we know substantially come from burning fossil fuels, without cutting back on the use of fossil fuels,” Mr Doherty said.

Mr Doherty said the connection is “reasonably obvious” and called on global leaders to enact rapid change, ahead of a global climate summit hosted by President Joe Biden on Thursday night.

“Fossil fuels that are burnt anywhere on the planet impact on our wellbeing,” he said.

“If we’re a major fossil fuel exporter then basically if we’re going to make a real contribution we have to do what we can to cut that supply chain.

“We have enormous potential to produce renewables here, we have enormous potential to develop a new and greener economy; if we’re going to do that, expanding fossil fuel production is clearly not in line with it.”
