Grassroots activists, attending the Non Governmental
Organisations (NGO) forum at Huairo on the fringes of the Beijing
are demanding action on abortion and lesbian rights. Islamic women
denouncing abortion were heckled by pro-choice groups. Lesbians
marched past opponents of sexual freedom, while governments were
ridiculed for repression, nuclear policies and imperialism. An
effigy of Ronald McDonald outside a fast food stand was toppled as
a symbol of culinary imperialism. The protests tested the limits
of tolerence among chinese security police.
