If you are a lindy hopper or tap dancer, the Shim Sham is a must-know. The Shim Sham is kind of a national anthem for us.

The origins date back to the late 1920s when Leonard Reed and Willie Bryant created the routine, which they called “Goofus”, as a quick finale number for a tap show. A few years later the routine started to spread around rapidly and caught the name Shim Sham or Shim Sham Shimmy. From very early on the tradition of doing the Shim Sham as a group started to form.

As the routine spread along came different variations and people started doing it without the taps too. The best-known variation may be Frankie Manning’s Shim Sham which is the version in the Lindy Hop world today. Some of the other well-known variations, at least for lindy hoppers, are Al & Leon Shim Sham and Dean Collins’ Shim Sham.
