We’ve Made the Journey Before: Early Mexican American Literature and Luis Alberto Urrea’s Into the Beautiful North

A presentation by SFPL’s Elena V. Valdez, PH.D.

In this talk, Dr. Elena Valdez will discuss how early Mexican American writings might enhance our understanding of Urrea’s novel and challenge what we think we know about the US-Mexico borderlands and the “immigrant experience.”

Dr. Elena Valdez is a scholar and educator with familial ties to towns and villages throughout northern New Mexico. She holds a doctorate in English and a graduate certificate in the Study of Women, Gender and Sexuality from Rice University. Dr. Valdez moved back to her hometown of Santa Fe after completing her doctoral program in 2019 and currently works as a part-time reference librarian at the Santa Fe Public Library. Her areas of teaching and research include American literature, Chicanx literature and culture, Latinx literature, folklore studies, women of color feminist genealogies, and decolonial theory.
