Описание к видео Black Panther Party: Stokley Carmichael

Stokely Carmichael, who later changed his name to Kwame Ture, was a prominent civil rights and Black Power activist. Born in Trinidad, he moved to New York City and became a key figure in the American civil rights movement.

Carmichael's activism began while he was a student at Howard University, where he joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1960. He participated in the Freedom Rides in 1961 to challenge segregation and was arrested and jailed for his actions.

He became a full-time SNCC organizer after graduating in 1964 and worked on voter registration drives in Mississippi and Alabama. In 1966, he became chairman of SNCC, a position he held until 1967. During his time as chairman, SNCC became more militant, and it was during a march in Mississippi that Carmichael first popularized the slogan "Black Power."

The Black Power movement advocated for self-defense, self-determination, and racial pride. In 1967, Carmichael, along with Charles V. Hamilton, co-authored the book *Black Power: The Politics of Liberation*, which defined the concept and discussed the roots of racism in the United States.

After leaving SNCC in 1968, Carmichael became the "Honorary Prime Minister" of the Black Panther Party, although he later left the party due to ideological differences. He eventually moved to Guinea, West Africa, and changed his name to Kwame Ture to honor Pan-African leaders Kwame Nkrumah and Sékou Touré. For the remainder of his life, he was a leader in the All-African People's Revolutionary Party, which was dedicated to Pan-Africanism. He died in 1998.
