The average salary of a software engineer in San Francisco, United States is $242,030 - which is an insane amount of money to pay for someone sitting behind a computer in a comfy office writing code - which has led to a massive gold rush of people studying CS and learning to code.

But it is not like this everywhere - for example, in Paris the average salary for the exact same job is a mere $66,341.

For most of us in Europe, we just see it as “well that’s just how it is” - but I wanted to dig into why this is the case - why is Europe so far behind the US in tech, is learning to code even worth it outside the US, and why is the situation probably going to get even worse in the future for European tech?
