Maximal Aerobic Speed training has become increasingly popular with team sport athletes at the sub-elite and elite level. The maximal aerobic speed (MAS) concept is based upon obtaining VO2 max at the lowest intensity/speed. Obtaining an athlete's MAS is usually obtained by completing a maximal aerobic fitness test such as the beep test, Yo-Yo test or a time trial.

With an athlete's MAS score, we can then program specific interval distances for each athlete and can progressively overload these intervals as needed to further improve aerobic capacity. For a team sport squad, the beauty of MAS interval programming lies in being able to have all athletes complete their shuttles at once, with various different starting points depending on the level of aerobic capacity.

In this video from the TRIAX Performance team, the boys go through Maximal Aerobic Speed running from start to finish. We talk through determining an MAS score, before calculating the necessary interval lengths and distances for your athletes. The boys then demonstrate how to facilitate an MAS interval session and what is required of athletes and coaches during these efforts.

How to determine your Maximal Aerobic Speed Score:

Step 1 - Run a maximal test

Step 2 - For example, if an athlete obtains an MAS score of 4.5 m/s - meaning they achieved VO2 max at 4.5m/s during their maximal test, then for a 10 second running interval that athlete would be required to complete 45 metres during that shuttle.
