The Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Benue state governor, Mr Cletus Akwaya, on Friday shed more light on the lingering crisis between Fulani herdsmen and Tiv local farmers in Benue state "which has been on for three years and has caused damage of monumental proportion".
He noted that the "Fulani herdsmen do their business by grazing cattle and often times the cattle find themselves in the farmlands and come in contact with the farmers and most times triggers violent reactions especially the farmers when they have their crops destroyed" adding that "they engage the herdsmen"
He said the quest for seeking of greener pastures for cattle by the Fulani herdsmen has "often times brought the two groups to clashes" insisting that it "has caused damage of monumental proportion".
Mr Akwaya further noted that the clash between the two groups has led to "destruction of property, massive killings and massive dislocation of the population especially around the border local governments around Nasarawa and Benue states" maintaining that "it has been of great concern to the Benue state government".
Noting that the two groups have a historical relationship of friendship, Mr Akwaya noted that it is difficult to say that these Fulani (herdsmen) who have come in, which has led to the situation which we have at hand, are different from the Fulani herdsmen that used to be friendly to the host communities.
Mr Akwaya accused the "Fulani herdsmen that come in (to the host communities) with all members of their families are heavily armed with various sophisticated weapons and are ready to open fire even without provocation".
