The ruins of the old McKendree Miner's Hospital are located on the McKendree Road about 3.7 miles from the beginning of the road at the town of Prince, Fayette County, West Virginia. The ruins are located along the New River in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The hospital operated from 1901 to 1941, serving coal miners who worked in the Gorge. As coal was exhausted in the Gorge in the 1930's, and communities died out, the hospital no longer served its purpose. Thereafter, it became the "West Virginia Home for Aged and Infirm Colored Men and Women," before closing permanently in 1955. By 1969, except for what is shown in this video, it was completely torn down, and most of its bricks recycled into houses in Fayette County and other places. All that remains of the small town of McKendree and the hospital are house and building foundations, retaining walls, stairs leading to the hospital site, and a few buildings of various deteriorating states.
