1996 was a year of firsts, including: The first Sands of the World Ceremony, the first Olympic style individual medals, the first surf event officially attended by an member of the International Olympic Committee, the first to feature the world’s top pros competing for their national teams, and the first with an official welcome message from the President of the United States.

The 1996 event was a bold initial step in Surfing’s Olympic Wave.
