FRE- Le film se déroule en 1974 et suit le parcours d'Agron, un dresseur de chevaux militaires respecté, dont le régiment est soupçonné d'être impliqué dans un coup d'État contre la dictature communiste d'Enver Hoxha. En représailles, le régime décide d'abattre les chevaux de l'armée en annonçant qu'ils sont malades et doivent être abattus. Agron, un officier dévoué qui sait que les chevaux ne sont pas malades, propose d'abattre un magnifique étalon arabe qu'il affectionne. Cependant, au lieu de tuer l'animal, il l'emmène à la campagne et le confie à des gitans.
Le commissaire du haras soupçonne la supercherie et dénonce Agron. Après avoir été arrêté et torturé, il est jugé et, malgré le témoignage du commandant du haras qui connaît la malveillance du commissaire, il est condamné à quinze ans de prison. Ses parents sont expulsés de leur appartement et contraints à l'exil. Sous la pression de sa famille, sa femme enceinte demande le divorce et meurt ensuite des suites d'un avortement clandestin.
Agron est libéré alors que les rues sont emplies de citoyens en liesse, célébrant la chute de la dictature. Sans famille où retourner, il erre dans les rues lorsqu'il croise soudain l'ancien commissaire, fraîchement élu au Parlement. L'homme lui promet d'avoir tout fait pour le sauver et promet de l'aider désormais. Agron le fixe froidement, et l'ancien commissaire s'en va. Agron s'éloigne, seul, vers une destination inconnue.

ENG- The film takes place in 1974 and follows a respected military horse trainer, Argon, whose regimen is suspected of being involved in a coup against the communist dictatorship of Enver Hoxha. In retaliation, the regime decides to destroy the army's horses by announcing that the horses are sick and must be shot. Agron, a devoted officer who knows that the horses are not sick, offers to shoot a beautiful Arab stallion he loves. However, instead of killing the horse, he takes it into the country and he gives it to some gypsies.
The commissar at the stud suspects what has happened and denounces (spies) Agron. After being arrested and tortured, he is put on trial where, despite testimony from the commandant of the stud who knows the commissar's malice, he is sentenced to fifteen years. His parents are evicted from their flat and sent into exile. Under pressure from her family, his pregnant wife files for divorce and then dies after a backstreet abortion.
Agron is released while the streets are full of jubilant citizens celebrating the overthrow of the dictatorship. With no family to return to, he wanders the streets when he suddenly bumps into the ex-commissar, newly elected to Parliament. The man promises that he did everything he could to save Agron and will now do anything he can to help. Agron stares at him coldly, and the ex-commisar leaves. Agron walks away, alone, in unknown direction.
