Earlier it was expected that Roman sailors relied solely on cold or preserved food.

New discoveries of wrecks in the Mediterranean have shed new light on this, however, as a number of ships with kitchen facilities have been found.

This indicated that the sailors have also been fed hot meals onboard, while en route between ports.
