UNION TERMINAL (Brad Underwood) -- Some of the region's brightest and youngest minds put their innovations on display Saturday afternoon. 9-year-old Gus Kleinfeldt has the perfect way to pick up his toys. It's called the GK Baseball Picker Upp-er."All you have to do is press down and it picks them up, said Gus.Gus wasn't the only person who thought it was a good idea, so did the judges.11-year-old Yashmit Deshpande was also a winner. The Y-Alert Bumper Display System is not only innovative, but could actually save lives on the road."Say that Im driving and I suddenly spot a deer on the side of the road, said Yashmit. I will be able to notice and tell other drivers that there's a deer. You never know if that deer will come out on the road and the car behind you could crash into that deer."And because you're behind the wheel, the notification is voice activated. "Whatever I say, it pops up right there, said Yashmit. So imagine this as the bumper of my car and it would display for other drivers to see it."To get to this convention, these more than 150 kids have already won prizes for their inventions. Many are clever creations, some actually solve problems. Like the Fire Melter 2000. This invention melts snow around hydrants in a three foot radius using solar polar so in the event the hydrant is covered in snow the fire department can find it.For his idea, Ryan Martz took home first place in his grade division. Currently there are three regional divisions in Ohio for the Invention Convention but that could soon change. "We are hoping in three to five years this could be a state wide competition where the winners from the regions go to a state competition to pick the overall winner, said the Invention Conventions Stephen Zonars.Various prizes, including college scholarships, were awarded to the top inventors.
