The Australian continent is home to countless weird species of birds and wildlife. One of the weirdest sounds you will hear there is the call of the Spotted catbird. This aptly named species is a member of the Bower bird family, although it does not create bowers like its cousins.

Spotted catbird calls have been likened to cat meows and yowls. Some of the calls I heard will remotely resemble these, but that is a very reductive way to describe them. To my ears they sound like something designed in a studio using vocoders, bird sounds and synthesizers. The calls are rich in overtones that fluctuate up and down in a comical manner. It's a beautiful reminder that nature is full of little sonic gems and surprises.
