President Donald Trump announced he will place the District of Columbia police under direct federal control and deploy the National Guard to "help reestablish law and order" to tackle homelessness and crime.

Trump described the situation as "a tragic emergency." He said the city is unsafe, as well as "dirty and disgusting."

The president said D.C. should be one of the safest, cleanest, "most beautiful" cities in the nation and vowed to cleanup the "trash and the grime" with the help of authorities.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who joined Trump at the briefing, compared sending the Guard into the nation’s capital to deployments to the southern U.S. border and Los Angeles.

“You will see them flowing into the streets of Washington in the coming week," Hegseth said, noting that the Pentagon is prepared to bring in other "specialized units" if necessary.

"They will be strong. They will be tough, and they will stand with their law enforcement partners," he said.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said the Trump administration is going to "use every power we have" to stop crime in D.C. not only for the people who live and work there, but for those who visit.
