Linguistic signs are arbitrary for the most part because of a lack of inherent or obvious connection between the form of a word and its meaning. However, words can be phonologically, morphologically or semantically motivated. Among these, semantically motivated words especially stand out because they may provide us with enough or almost enough information so that we can understand what they refer to. Certain types of Sanskrit compounds are particularly interesting in this regard, and they represent the central theme of this video.
