The pavilion is a response to two needs identified by Viana do Castelo City Council: on the one hand, the city needed a sports pavilion as a support for the nearby Pedro Barbosa School; and, on the other, it needed a space that gave the city’s population access to sports activities in a sheltered facility, thus making it possible to close a gap in terms of the public offering of said type of
infrastructure.
Given the need for strong financial control and to equip the building with infrastructures designed with easy access maintenance in mind, the overall costs were limited to a pre-defined level by the city council. These demands became a true challenge in terms of how to respond to the commission. For this reason, the design also made use of Brutalism, but without taking things
to the extreme; the Brutalist connection was more perceptible in the changing/shower rooms and games field area.
In volumic terms, the pavilion is essentially made up of two parallelipeds (on the east and west sides) that are placed perpendicularly to each other, forming a single volume of dynamic and austere lines. The building predominantly features two finishing materials, exposed concrete and grey-blue stone cladding.

Este Pavilhão veio a responder a duas necessidades da Câmara Municipal de Viana do Castelo: por um lado, precisava de um Pavilhão Desportivo que desse apoio à Escola EB 2,3 Pedro Barbosa. Por outro, precisava de um espaço que permitisse à população o acesso à pratica de atividades desportivas em instalações cobertas, conseguindo assim colmatar uma deficiência na oferta pública deste tipo de infraestruturas.
Devido à necessidade de um forte controlo financeiro e de dotar o edifício de infraestruturas pensadas para uma manutenção de fácil acesso, o custo global da obra foi cerceado num valor pré-estabelecido pela Câmara Municipal. Estas exigências tornaram-se num verdadeiro desafio na forma de pensar para responder ao solicitado. Daí, também surgir no projeto a utilização de uma imagem brutalista, sem ser levada ao extremo, percetível nos balneários e campo de jogos.
Volumetricamente, o pavilhão é em termos gerais composto por dois corpos paralelepípedicos (nascente e poente), implantados perpendicularmente entre eles, formando no seu todo um volume único, de linhas dinâmicas e sóbrias. O edifício apresenta predominantemente dois materiais de acabamento, o betão aparente e uma placagem de pedra grampeada cinza-azulada.
