Authors: Achmad Sunjayadi, Fajar Muhammad Nugraha

This article traces the situation at the beginning of tourism activity in eastern Indonesia, when the effort to develop tourism in eastern Indonesia began and which parts of eastern Indonesia that introduced as a tourist destination at the time. The aim is to reveal the beginning of tourism activity in eastern Indonesia. The primary source used are travelogues, tourist guidebooks at the end of the nineteenth century until the first half of the twentieth century. Besides historical methods, this article uses a geographical approach (Demay, 2014) and the concept of tourism places, space, and change by Shaw and Williams (2004). As a result, the beginning of tourism activity in eastern Indonesia has existed since the end of the nineteenth century although when it has not been regulated. The eastern Indonesia tourism introduced in Reisgids voor Nederlandsch Indië (1896), a Dutch guide book, later translated in English Guide to the Dutch East Indies (1897) published by Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij (KPM), the Dutch shipping company. It relates to the shipping line of KPM in Eastern Indonesia.
