Have you ever heard the story of John Smith and the mermaid? John Smith, the same person from the Pocahontas tale, claimed that he encountered a mermaid near the shores of the West Indies in 1614. According to his account, Smith saw a woman swimming gracefully along the coastline. He described her as having unusually long ears, a slightly short nose, remarkably round eyes, and hair as green as the sea. Additionally, he observed that she had an enchanting upper body but a lower body resembling that of a fish.

Although some doubt the truthfulness of this story, the mystery surrounding it persists. One source suggests that Smith may not have been in the West Indies but rather in Newfoundland. Another historian argues that Smith was not present in the West Indies in 1614 but had been there in 1607.
